On Lists … of Kings and Frozen Queens

March 25, 2018 –  Yesterday I drove to Costa Mesa to do a job, this strange thing where I sometimes fix people’s lasers. Yes, I know how, strange, but true. If that gig would support me, my life would be easier, but alas, there’s only so much of that work.

On the trip, I was listening to the classic rock station. I’ve been in a total rock mood. Seriously, if I knew metal music, I would have listened to that. I suppose this is one of those hard-core times for me, keeping it to myself, at least for me, but things are a bit scary now. And there’s nothing like hard core guitar to make one feel better. Or at least stronger.

The radio was having list-day, or list weekend, or something with lists. People could text in song lists, and seeing as the people were choosing the majority of these songs, they were much  … more. Much deeper cuts, much harder sounding than the normal programing. I liked the list of Kings and Queens. But then again, I would … I would like hard core with that theme.

Okay, truth be told, I didn’t hear the rest of that list because I interrupted it to go get my very late lunch-dinner from In’n’Out, my version of a burger since I couldn’t be at the burger celebration of my dad’s 90th birthday. When I got back to the lists, the subject was songs about rain, seemingly much more programming-normal because as November Rain came on, I gave up on the radio. Perhaps the good playlist depends on the list-subject itself.

It made me wonder about lists generally. I’ve said it before; I don’t like them. Lists, they cause so much disagreement. The best this. The best that. But did you ever wonder if the musicians follow them? If they care if they are on them? How about we look to Sebastian Bach for an answer. He’s always up for … talking, in one form or another. Mind you, this isn’t Sebastian making a list with anyone on it but second place. But I’ll take it. And it’s a Steve Perry sighting, and I’ll take that too. You know, my dream of Steve singing again for Journey can only happen if Steve will actually go outside!

News has it that Jerry Cantrell of Alice In Chains had a birthday party. Steve Perry and Sebastian Bach were both guests at the birthday party and were reportedly hanging out together. Someone snapped a pic of the two together, and Sebastian copied it off some site, posting it to his own social media, posting he doesn’t “print out many picture I see or post on the Internet”, but this would “be one of them”. Sebastian included a long blurb, almost fan-boy in nature, saying he warms up to Steve Perry when he goes on tour. Sebastian said “Steve’s voice is so incredible to listen to and such an inspiration to all vocalists worldwide”. In setting the situation where he said he got to spend the afternoon with Steve, Sebastian said Steve is “one of my top two favorite singers on the planet.” Humm, on second thought, perhaps that’s Steve in either the number 1 or the number 2 spot, instead of being number 2, but however one reads that, it’s Sebastian’s list of vocalists regardless. Number 2, or number 1 is Steve Perry. I’m not sure who’s in the other place is, or if there are any after number 1 and number 2, but there you go, a list made by a musician. And of course, it’s always fun to read the comments on any story on Blabbermouth about Sebastian Bach, even if I actually am starting to feel bad for Sebastian because he will forever be associated with Chick-fil-A.

And in some twisted sense, and SO not metal, let alone rock,  somehow, YouTube suggested to me…. Elsa. Elsa? After playing Aerosmith? Elsa? Perhaps that’s a “Queen”? Anyways, the animated series Frozen is now a Broadway musical. I watched a news story on it, culminating in reading comments from folks saying that feminists are ruining the world. What? That aside, I’m not sure Elsa as a human being works for me. I want Elsa’s hair to be silver, meaning white, not blonde, sliver like the silver-haired sister in The Huntsman, Winter’s War, the movie nobody saw except me. Oh I’m sure this person playing Elsa is highly regarded and fabulous, but if we have to have Elsa be a human being, this Broadway actress is not working for me. I’d say why, but I’m afraid someone would say I’m being mean. Or not feminist. Or not not-feminist. So I leave it to your imagination.

Still though, I’m comfortable saying that as far as frozen queens go, give me silver, The Hunstman silver. It can be done in human form. And not meaning to stray too far from my rock and metal mood, I just want to show you silver, and the difference between silver and blonde (as one sister is blonde and you can see the difference).

Humm, it’s  not metal; it’s not rock, but I do like this song, the lyrics especially. Perhaps I could make it metal – my version of metal-Halsey. That would be cool!
