The Radio Takes Its Influence From Social Media

March 28, 2021 – I had TOO many doctor’s appointments this week. Okay, two, but that is too many. One was for me, one was for my dog. What was good though was that I got to hear the radio more, okay, really that’s because when I take Jasper to the vet, I have to wait outside in the car, but I, sometimes, get lucky and hear new things on the radio. Mind you, I bounce around on the channels, so I hear all the genres I have pre-set – rock, country, alternative and pop. And there’s this kind of crazy thing I’m noticing, and that is, things are getting on the radio from social media.

Take this song.

I keep hearing it on KROQ – the alternative station. Oh and that station played Lana Del Rey’s song Blue Jeans yesterday. I almost cried! It was so good to hear that song on the radio. Okay, sure, it took from 2012 to get onto the radio, but I’ll take it. As for the song, above, it turns out that girl is from Tik Tok. I didn’t even know that was a thing?

It reminds me of these other girls who often come up in my YouTube who cover the songs I like. There’s a young girl named Emilee, and a phrase of that girl’s cover of the old song Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You became the loop of a dance song that was all over pop radio late last year. Here’s her YouTube version, just the girl and her guitar, and the radio version, following each other.

Then, there’s this song. This one is rock, so if you managed to get through these popish songs I put you through first, then this next one will be your reward. The song plays on KLOS, our rock station, not a lot, but some. What I took note of was the DJ saying “Satchel”. I barely caught it, so I had to find it, and it turns out, Satchel is a character playing one of the directors in the video. I think the song is pretty good, but the video is hilarious. Then again, anything Steel Panther touches is hilarious. Take a look:

So, the moral of this story: put your own music up on socials. Whether it be on YouTube, or Tik Tok or wherever; people are paying attention to all of it. And as that first song says in its lyrics, you just might end up on the radio!
