I guess you can tell by now I like it when music genres crossover from one to another, when I can hear old-school rock influences in pop, dance, country and alternative. I loved the song Royals when I first heard it and not just because of the lyric I’m in love with being queen, although that’s really gorgeous! I loved it because the song had a great vibe that appealed to both my love of old-school sound and of newness, and audiences agreed taking the song from its start on modern stations to number one on the pop chart. And speaking of gorgeous? I have to say it’s really gorgeous when the old-school patriarchs give credit to what is new, and better yet cover something that is new, when they surprise me. Sure rock covers itself. Van Halen, you all are familiar with that band right? Some of the most played songs are the covers of older songs, You Really Got Me, Pretty Woman, You’re No Good, and a handful more. And sometimes bands cover songs, popular songs of other rock artists, on tour. Bruce Springsteen reportedly covered Aussie bands while touring in Australia last month, playing songs from AC/DC, INXS and the Bee Gees. I think that’s great, but not surprising. What is surprising is his cover for the fans attending his New Zealand concerts. At his Auckland concert on March 1, Bruce covered LORDE, someone I’m sure most old-school rock artists would find to be very different from what they know and love. Mind you, given the song’s theme of being queen by following one’s heart instead of money, Bruce necessarily altered the lyrics slightly. Oh and that really gorgeous line? Well, I guess Bruce is in love with being boss king.
