Okay not the kind of Pay to Play where an unknown band has to pay to get a gig in a club, but the kind where fans pay to bring their band to them. Prompted by another completely different conversation about guitar tone, and you know how much I love to talk about tone (insert ubiquitous wink here), I happened upon this….
The Foo Fighters, the ’90s project by former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl turned actual band, are wanted by a certain dude in Richmond, Virginia. Sure that dude could travel to … well, somewhere away from Richmond to see the Foo Fighters, but he wants to bring the Foo Fighters to him, in Richmond. And he’s willing to pay. He has raised $10,000 towards his goal of $70,000, selling tickets for $50 each for an actual venue that seats 1,400 people, all refundable if he doesn’t actually reach the money goal. When the dude gets to the $70,000 goal, he’s going to go to the Foo Fighters with it and see if they’ll play his concert. Now that’s what I call self-promotion! Will the dude reach his goal? Will the Foo Fighters do it? Personally, I think this could be fun. So? Who would you want to pay to play? And … where?
