January 27, 2019 — When I was young, somehow I always knew when some cool artist or band was going to play in the small venues . I don’t remember how I knew. Perhaps it was my friends who knew. Probably. Because now I seem to miss everything I think would be cool to see.
I love small venues. I love seeing anyone, any genre, perform there simply because you can see them. Plus, almost always, they are super human, and by that I don’t mean superhuman, like in some X-men kind of thing, but a human that’s more human than you think they are going to be. Last year I knew when Lana Del Rey was going to play a small place. Sort of. I saw her mention it as to two of those smaller shows, but somehow there were other places she played that I knew nothing about. It’s not Lana this time, and it’s not even someone I particularly follow, but just someone I would have liked to see had I known.
Who? Kasey Musgraves. She’s a country singer. She’s from Mineloa, Texas, not that that matters to anyone, but that’s right by my land in East Texas, one town from the one I’m originally from, and the town I seem to go to more now anyways. Mineola has the best bar-b-que around. It’s the town on the road coming from Dallas before our land, and we always stop there, so I’ve grown attached to it. A Mineola girl in LA; I must go see her! Who knows, I might even be related to her. There’s nobody left for me to ask, but there’s a lot of ties around there, and that last name is really familiar to me.
As for her music, I’m not a huge fan, not like I am of Lana’s, but I always like the songs of hers I heard on the radio. And she seems authentic in her playing, like kind of the opposite of what Taylor Swift’s haters would say about Taylor. Plus, my morning news search showed a glowing review of her show at the Beacon in New York City, a small intimate venue. Apparently, she had a really diverse audience and talked about it to the audience. The review made her seems like a really good person to see in a small venue.
So, thinking it might be possible to see her, I did a search for her show in Los Angeles. Turns out, she’s playing a small venue in downtown, similar to the Beacon in New York, but of course, because it’s Los Angeles, both nights of her show are sold out. From what I can see, the original ticket price was between $35 and $45, yet the only available tickets at the resellers are minimum high $200s. I don’t know whether to be angry at the resellers, or to be angry that I don’t ever seem to know with enough notice to get tickets from the venue. Or is that even possible when the resellers are out there? And Kelly Musgraves? In Los Angeles? Are there really that many people here who will pay that premium? I don’t get it! At any rate, I’ve made a New Year’s resolution. I’m going to look for a list of venues or small shows, or something, so I can have a shot at trying to get tickets from the venues. I mean really? A home-town girl comes to Los Angeles, and I can’t go give my East Texas fangirl support for her? That’s just so sad. She needs me in that audience! Anyways, I’ll be looking for a review of her shows (which are February 14 and 15), and will be rooting her on. Mineloa, bitches! And Mineola bitches in the land north of LA; that looks just like where I have my land I’m trying to collect. I think I’ve become a fan!
