June 21, 2020 – This is a short article … because I have a hurt fingertip on my right hand. It’s making typing hard, so forgive me for keeping this one simple. Or perhaps y’all will like that better – a quieter me. Oh and a preliminary greeting to all the fathers out there – Happy Father’s Day to you all, fathers to children of course, but also fathers to pets and cars as well. Our babies come in many forms.
And now to my story.
I’ve had a car radio now for about two months, give or take a week or so. Honestly, I really did miss having one. The radio has ten presets, so I’ve been frenetically switching between the various genres I have set on the various rows. Perhaps because I’ve been without radio for so long, it’s actually good to hear classic rock, you know the repetitive playing of the same old songs they always play on our classic rock station, KLOS. But I do have to give them a bit of credit, especially in the time slot just before noon when I normally hear the radio. In that time slot, they do seem to play new music. It’s a new thing. I’ve even heard Pretty Reckless about three times, something that never actually happened even on the album with the number one songs they made about four years ago.
Lately, I keep hearing a song, kind of a punky song. The first time I heard the song, the radio station preceded the playing of the song by their new music call-out, with the band’s name and the song title. I had no familiarity with the band name or with the song. It was a fun song though, kind of punky, and after that, I heard the song quite a lot. Other times, the station touts the band as being teenagers from Malibu. I can imagine how cool and fun it must be for those teenagers from Malibu to hear their song on the radio.
I tried to find the song on Youtube, and while I can find the band, I can’t find the particular song the radio seems to play. The band is called Violet Saturn. Oh and really it’s a duo, a teenage brother and sister, with studio musicians on the parts other than lead guitar and vocals. I saw that they were on the radio station’s morning show feature “Stay or Go”, where the radio station features two songs, and people call in to vote “stay” or “go”. I’ve heard this contest for years, even heard some “stay” votes, but never have I actually heard any “stay” song on the radio. Looks like the radio station actually finally put a “stay” song on the playlist. I’m not sure if the band has any airplay anywhere else, or if it’s just local, but it is nice to see a radio station actually promoting something local.
I’m putting up one song, not the song I hear on the radio, and the link to the morning show feature on them; the song I hear on the radio (Say Goodbye) is the second song in the link. Personally, I prefer that song to the video.

Now if only it was like it was in 1987 when one could go to any LA bar around and find any LA band around and put them on the radio. Then that whole “stay or go” feature would really be something. At any rate, I do have to admit, it’s nice to see young people making their way into rock ‘n’ roll. I mean that’s an actual guitar. Hopefully there will be more.
And back to Father’s Day, keeping with these guys for a bit, they talk about dads, and moms too, in this one. And seriously, why not play Steel Panther on the radio? I would vote “stay” for sure!
