Okay, seriously, how many meetings have I sat through in my life? Deary, deary, too many. I swear there are meetings about meetings. But this one — actually a press conference for the Kiss/Def Leppard concert tour — is pretty cool! My particular favorite is the conversation between Lep’s frontman Joe Elliott and Kiss’ frontman Paul Stanley about playing the hits true to form (~14:18-16:29), as opposed to playing a blues groove — something they won’t do and which he seemed to suggest was … boring. Joe acknowledges the differences Kiss records had from other 70s records in that the records had five songs on each side instead of the more “indulgent” 70s records where a song could be an entire album side (Physical Graffiti, anybody?). Joe likened Lep’s songs to the Kiss’ formula — tight, short (3ish minutes), pop-influenced, with strong guitar, strong drums, hooks and a good chorus. And that truly was speaking to my heart Joe; that’s just the way I like it! My surprise was Paul! He was utterly, totally and absolutely cool, all while seeming approachable, echoing the same sentiment about playing hits, saying it’s a disrespect to the fans if they don’t do the songs the way the fans know the songs from the record (or cd, recognizing people might not remember records): “if it’s boring for us, either we’re ungrateful to you, or those songs sucked to begin with”. I like a man with the courage of his convictions, in fact I like that more than anything, and Paul certainly has that! Oh and he has some pretty cool shoes too, not to mention that high hair!
