February 3, 2019 – I didn’t hate the Superbowl performance; I thought I would, but I didn’t. What I didn’t understand, at all, were the young women in that Maroon-5-made audience right by the stage. Seriously, not even if Robert Plant, not even if David Lee Roth, not even if Lana Del Rey (okay feel free to laugh at me now), threw out a sweaty shirt would I be all into it. But those girls couldn’t get enough of the Maroon 5 singer. What’s his name? You know what? I can’t remember. Not right as I type this, and I don’t feel like looking it up. I don’t get the attraction to that guy. And I’m pretty sure that guy would be surprised to know that any female doesn’t get him. Perhaps that’s it. If someone promotes their own applause or girl-reverence, I’m not into it. But I really kept thinking girl music for me is so different than it is for those girls. So that leaves the actual performance, or my own personal random thoughts about it.
I didn’t know that guy played guitar. Apparently he does.
The performance was vocal heavy. I found myself wanting to see the musicians, at least every once in a while.
The lighting part of the show was really fun. I liked the lights that looked like those balloon things. I liked their message of love.
I didn’t think I would, but I actually liked the rapper interludes. I thought the production integrated those well. I thought they were relevant. I even knew the Outkast song. That was the second one, for my rocker friends. Oh and I loved the Cadillac.
Contradicting myself, I didn’t like the first rapper guy’s outfit. Mostly though, it’s because I hate pants that don’t come exactly to a man’s waist. His weren’t too droopy, but I still think they were droopy to an extent, and I find that distracting. The second guy was old-school pimp, and while I am not a fan of wearing fur (the animal lover in me), I think it made sense. Hopefully it was vintage fur.
I didn’t like the choir, but I loved the drums.
I liked it that I knew the songs. Again, I thought I wouldn’t, but I did. Those songs are what one hears on those random play-anything stations when I drive across the country.
And my final thought, as of my writing time at 6:33 left in the third quarter, as they play some Maroon 5, (“got moves like Mick Jagger”), I liked that the half-time show was a break from watching all of this punting. Honestly, before that Patriots’ field goal, I was hoping the score would be 0-0. I thought that would be great for such a defense-heavy game. I just wanted to know what would happen in that case. But the Patriots scored their 3. Now … to go cheer on the Rams to get a field goal or two too! Oh wow, at publication time, my cheering worked. One field goal. One to go. Then our boys can come back to LA, triumphant! Crossing my fingers ….
