Do It Yourself, and I Mean, Do It!

July 19, 2020 – I know I need to suspend my question of where did they get the money for this, but wherever they got it, they are doing it, really doing it. I’m speaking about Dirty Honey – they are another band that our local radio station features. The local radio station is promoting the heck out of a virtual concert by Dirty Honey at the Sunset Strip called the Viper Room. There’s a stream that costs $9ish, plus a small service fee (they always mention the small service fee); the stream will be on July 24. The ad is the cover photo.

A few months ago, I saw the video for the song Rolling 7s as a suggestion in YouTube. I liked the video, the song too, although I just assumed this was another up and coming signed band that was getting promotion on YouTube. Wrong, I was.

What I now see is that Dirty Honey, a new LA band, isn’t even signed, yet they ended up with two songs that went to number 1 on the mainstream rock chart. Mind you, I am not following charts. Perhaps I should. But seriously? They did this themselves? How? And yes, seriously, where did they get the money?

That aside, it shows two things: people want rock music … and record labels are stupid for not knowing that and signing these bands. The song below, When I’m Gone, is the first song by an unsigned band to hit number 1 after entering, then climbing the rock chart for 21 weeks. This is true grass roots, people. And I have to say, I’m really happy it’s coming out of LA. Kudos to KLOS (LA’s classic rock station) for coming around to the modern era by featuring these new bands. Kudos as well for promoting the heck out of this show. Who needs a label anyway?

Wow, it makes me want to do … something.
