An Unlikely Pairing

March 26, 2017 — Sometimes I see cross-over music that I think is good, but how about cross-over pairing? Or perhaps it’s cross-over time? What do you do if you’re an ‘80s band wanting to capture some of the current cash they all seem to be making, but your singer … fell the way of rock and roll and is no longer with you? Enter American Idol? Can you tell by the question marks at the end of each of these first sentences that I’m not at all sure what to think of this one?

American Idol. The very words give me chills, and not in a good way… except for Carrie Underwood, and I love her. 2011 brought a rock contestant, apparently, not that I really know because I didn’t watch that show. I know there were other rockers, but they were rare. Turns out the band Quiet Riot, which has gone through a handful of singers, is touring with American Idol’s rock contestant-finalist James Durbin. I think the photos look a bit odd – old rockers in all their glory and a young guy with his requisite Millennial short beard, but they have a surprisingly convincing sound. The comments on Blabberrmouth were funny – lots of people wanting to hate this, but they seemed to like it. Honestly, me too.

Oh, but the alleged rumors that Taylor Momsen (singer of The Pretty Reckless) will do some feature on Eminem’s upcoming record (rap songs often feature a good vocalist singing the hooks of the chorus), please say that isn’t true. That’s not a pairing I’m excited to see, kind of like when people take Lana del Rey vocals and speed them up for EDM. Yuck. Taylor said she’s not working on such a feature, but she did praise Eminem’s talents. Okay, fair enough; it’s good to be nice, but please let that not be an invitation.

As for me, I’m going to be pairing with Interstate 40 and other highways and freeways tomorrow. I’m going home with a enormous feeling of fear and a feeling that my work here is so incomplete. Mind you I don’t really think this has anything to do with the kind of pairings I’m talking about, but I sure do hope the music on the road pairs well with my drive. How’ that? That sort of ties to this story. Safe travels to me and my babies. See y’all on the flip side at my home come Tuesday morn.
